General Equipment List
Footwear: Good strong, weatherproof walking boots with good ankle support and a deep tread. Should be 'broken-in'. Other shoes are unsatisfactory.
Clothing: The weather in Scotland can change rapidly. Several thin layers allow you to adapt more easily to temperature fluctuations rather than one thick one. Avoid wearing absorbent material next to the skin, i.e. cotton.
We would recommend (as a guideline only):
- Waterproof Jacket & Trousers. Breathable ones are more comfortable but not essential. Trousers should preferably have side zips to allow putting on over boots.
- Waterproof Gaiters. Useful over boots at any time of the year to keep out water, snow or mud.
- Warm Clothing. Polarfleece and fibrepile jackets are ideal as are wool sweaters.
- Hat & Gloves. Fleece or wool material ideal.
- Woollen Socks. Approximately three pairs.
- Survival Kit. Survival bag, whistle and compass. Insect repellent essential between June and Mid-October.
- First Aid Kit. It is very important that this should include a blister kit.
- Water Bottle. 1ltr capacity ideal. Thermos flask (optional).
- Daypack. 25ltr or 30ltr size ideal including polythene liner to keep contents waterproof. Should be large enough to comfortably hold all your personal gear.
- Torch or head torch* (*Petzl range recommended) and spare batteries.
